Wildlife Group in Woburn - March 2026

Wildlife Walk in Woburn, March 19, 2026

On a blue sky and comparatively warm day a group of twelve met in the village car park in Woburn from where we strolled towards the deer park.

As we stopped to look at and learn about a lovely London Plane tree sharp-eyed Liz noted a white shape at the top of a tree across the lake.  Binocular views were required to eventually determine that this was an Osprey.  The bird flew to another, even more distant tree and helped us to confirm it’s identity.  Osprey are just arriving back in the country (the first Rutland Osprey having arrived just 4 days before our walk) and the bird we saw had obviously paused near a lake on its migration route.  We were so lucky to see it!

Continuing along our route we saw a foal with mother at the stables and then came upon our first group of Red Deer by a pond where there were also a variety of geese and ducks.  Unusually we saw only this one species of deer on our walk today.

We later saw black Grey Squirrels as we continued a very enjoyable walk in the parkland.

As we exited the park to walk along the roadside back towards the village we found a range of wild flowers, our first Orange Tip butterfly of the year and (for many) the first Bee-fly of the year.
