Wildlife Walk at Stewartby - Rookery North- July 2026

ROOKERY NORTH

16 July 2029

A group of 12 assembled outside Stewartby Village Hall to learn a little about the village of Stewartby which is celebrating it’s 100th year and walk at the new reserve of Rookery North.

This is a large body of water left following years of clay removal for the huge brick industry here during the last century. Some evidence of the past remains in what has now become an interesting and varied walk.

Although the birds were very quiet, as was expected at this time of year, we still managed to enjoy what was about together with a range of butterfly, dragonfly and moth species.  Clouded Yellow butterfly was a highlight for those lucky enough to spot it.  Much of the wildlife interest however was in the plants to be found.  We spent time looking at Italian Alder, St John’s Wort, Yellow Wort, Centaury, Wild Carrot and brambles amongst others.

Many of the group had not previously visited this site and several were planning to return agreeing that it is good to discover new and local places to visit.
